Thus Saith Paul - Romans 16

Thus Saith Paul

Romans Chapter Sixteen

"Greetings PAULINGS"

by Nikki

    A curious thing appears towards the end of this letter to the Romans.  We find out that the epistle was penned by someone other than Paul.  Apparently, this type of thing was common- "VIP's" dictated their words and hired scribes recorded them.

Before getting into this chapter, here are some scriptures that may or may not be of interest to you:

Jeremiah 8:8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

Matthew 7:29 For he (Yahshua) taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Matthew 23:13-15 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. :14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. :15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Isn't it odd that Yahshua continually rebuked not only the Pharisees (who sit in Moses' seat as though both knowing and teaching the actual TRUTH) but ALSO the SCRIBES who recorded things. . . ? And here, Yahshua is clearly telling us something!  He's saying the Pharisees and SCRIBES (Writers) go world-wide with their LIES, making others two-fold the child of Hell that they are! WOE!  But how do the Scribes accomplish such a thing?  Hmm . . . look in the bible and you'll see how they do it.  Compare the teachings of PAUL with the TRUTHS of Yahshua and you'll see exactly how the "Pharisees" through their "Scribes" accomplished their task of deceiving the whole world!

Matthew 23:23-29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. :24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. :25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. :26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. :27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. :28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. :29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

HMM.

Romans 16:22 I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord.

So who was Tertius then?  According to web bible encyclopedia he was a Roman Christian whom Paul employed as his 'amanuensis' (hired to record what Paul dictated) in writing his epistle to the Romans.  According to the "latter rain" site (which I mention only because of its factual information, not for its doctrine), Tertius was Paul's scribe.

TERTIUS- (Copied from the "Latter Rain" Site)

Paul's scribe in the epistle to the Romans was Tertius, the date is AD 58. Paul is dictating a letter, in his room at the house of Gaius in the city of Corinth. He has been preaching in Corinth for some months, and has won many converts. For some time he has been planning to send a letter to a group of Christians in another city. Would Tertius be kind enough to come to the house of Gaius, some time this week and write a letter from Paul's dictation? Arriving at the house of Gaius, Tertius takes his seat at the writing table, stylus in hand.

Tertius is etching Paul's words on a papyrus sheet, one phrase at a time. Paul reclines on a couch, or perhaps in his enthusiastic manner walks back and forth across the room. While Tertius writes one clause, Paul thinks of the next. As he rapidly dictates the sentences, Tertius writes them down as fast as he can. He probably wrote the final copy of the letter in a "cursive" or running style of hand writing, which was different than the letters which were used in permanent books, just as our script is different than print. No spaces between the words in Tertius letter, and almost no punctuation marks.

It was a slow, painstaking task... Finally it was done. Then Paul reached over and took the stylus in his own hand to inscribe the last affectionate phrases and benediction. The papyrus was then carefully rolled inside a leather pouch and handed to the waiting Phoebe.

*(NOTE: Phoebe was a courier of Paul to the Roman Christians).

Tertius was a slave:

Tertius is the name of a slave. The name itself means "three", indicating that Tertius was the number three slave probably in the household of Gaius. In verse 23 we have another slave, Quartus, number four, sending greetings along with Erastus, the prominent city director of public works.

    Let's find out who all these people are! I'll just highlight the names and places mentioned below and link them to sites with information on them, to make it easier for you and for me as well.  I recommend you read the links!  They're not huge articles- just basic info. They're very interesting.

Romans 16:1 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:

Romans 16:2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer (helper) of many, and of myself also.

Romans 16:3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus:

Romans 16:4 Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.

Romans 16:5 Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my well-beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ.

Romans 16:6 Greet Mary, who bestowed much labour on us.

Romans 16:7 Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellow-prisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.

Romans 16:8 Greet Amplias my beloved in the Lord.

Romans 16:9 Salute Urbane, our helper in Christ, and Stachys my beloved.

Romans 16:10 Salute Apelles approved in Christ. Salute them which are of Aristobulus' household.
The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
ARISTOBULUS

An inhabitant of Rome, certain of whose household are saluted by Paul (Romans 16:10). He was probably a grandson of Herod and brother of Herod Agrippa, a man of great wealth, and intimate with the emperor Claudius. Lightfoot (Philippians, 172) suggests that "the household of Aristobulus" were his slaves, and that upon his death they had kept together and had become the property of the emperor either by purchase or as a legacy, in which event, however, they might, still retain the name of their former master. Among these were Christians to whom Paul sends greeting.

Romans 16:11 Salute Herodion my kinsman. Greet them that be of the household of Narcissus, which are in the Lord.

"It is an undisputed fact that Herod and his Herodion relatives were Edomites, and heirs to the serpent seed of the Canaanites. Below we see that Paul was a kinsman to these Edomites." (Thank-you Wolfgang for this information!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
HERODION -
he-ro'-di-on (Herodion; Westcott and Hort, The New Testament in Greek Hrodion):
A Roman Christian to whom Paul sent greetings (Romans 16:11). The name seems to imply that he was a freedman of the Herods, or a member of the household of Aristobulus, the grandson of Herod the Great (Romans 16:10). Paul calls him "my kinsman," i.e. "a Jew" (see JUNIAS, 1).
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Hero’dion,
a relative of St. Paul, to whom he sends his salutation amongst the Christians of the Roman church. (Romans 16:11) (A.D. 55.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Romans 16:12 Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord.

Romans 16:13 Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine.

Romans 16:14 Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes (this name has two descriptions- Hermes 2) and the brethren which are with them.

Romans 16:15 Salute Philologus, and Julia, Nereus, and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints which are with them.

If you've read through all the links listed above, you will have seen something interesting.  Please re-read what YAHSHUA had to say about the Pharisees and the Scribes (above from the book of Matthew) and then see if, just maybe, all these 'prominent folks' in Paul's company were exactly the kind of folks YAHSHUA KEPT BLASTING FOR BEING HYPOCRITES.

Romans 16:16 Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.

Gag. Didn't Judas Iscariot kinda BETRAY YAHSHUA WITH A KISS???  What?  Did Pharisee PAUL think it was a cool idea to carry on the tradition?

Romans 16:17-20 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. :18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. :19 For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. :20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Paul is gloating over the fact that he had managed to hoodwink the ROMANS and therefore, make himself look good to the whole world. Yep. He really is the Apostate to the Gentiles- (non-Israelites who like LIES INSTEAD OF TRUTH.)

    Romans 16:21 Timotheus my workfellow, and Lucius, (Lucius has 2 def. entries- 1 2) and Jason, (Jason has 2 def. enties- 1 2) and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you.

Romans 16:22 I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord.

Romans 16:23 Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother.

Romans 16:24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Romans 16:25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, :26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: :27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

Well, what can I say?  Paul's gospel accomplished what PAUL said it would:  Caused the whole world to follow "the mystery."

Please read the preceeding chapters of Romans, because I don't feel like saying another word about it.  I'm very happy that I did this study of Romans because at least for myself, the past five months of working on it has been very, very eye-opening.  Praise YAHWEH!  Amein.
